# Do Posture Correctors Actually Work?

## Summary

## Do posture correctors actually work?

Not the way they are sold.

The question people are really asking is this one: "can tech really retrain posture, or does it come from lasting behavior and strengthening?" Here is my answer.

"Posture correctors, smart clothing apps, all of these passively try to correct your posture, sometimes with a little vibration to remind you, sometimes with stitching or tape that pulls you back, but the key here is these are all passive corrections."

And that is the whole problem in one sentence. "Posture correctors are very misleading because they passively try to solve an active problem."

I think that these do not work as well as they are marketed. Posture is a subconscious and active process. Key word is active. We need to train your muscles and body to be active in the right areas. These posture correctors try to passively fix an active problem and this is why they typically do not work.

## Why is posture an active problem?

Because your body does it, on purpose, all day.

"The issue here is posture is an active process." It is your body's built-in ability to keep you upright and your eyes level with the horizon, against gravity, for hours, without you thinking about it. "Posture is an active mechanism to be able to hold your body upright over time and resist gravity."

A strap, a shirt, or an app does none of that work for you. "There's no active engagement or stimulation being provided by these." It pulls your shoulders back, or it buzzes. The muscles that are supposed to hold you there are never asked to work.

## Is a back brace the same thing?

Not quite, and this is where I want to be fair.

"These posture correctors and back braces, they can be useful tools, but they can't become permanent solutions."

There are situations where external support earns its keep. "There are certain situations where external support can help temporarily", particularly when managing symptoms or a specific load. Back braces, "especially when we're dealing with an injury, I believe are good because they help reduce symptoms and create a window of opportunity for us to feed the body stimulus to create change."

The key word is window. "There's a time and place for them, usually for symptom management and at the acute phase, but after that, we have to teach the body how to move and how to become strong and resilient on its own."

And there is a cost to staying in one too long. "In time, we want people to come off these back braces because if they become so reliant on it, they don't create their own internal support mechanism, and they become dependent and more vulnerable to injury."

## What is the goal, then?

A body that does not need the device.

"A brace can support your body, but ideally, we want to build a body that doesn't need to be dependent on the brace, and we never want to be reliable on an external object." Instead, "we want to create your body's own internal mechanisms for stability and support."

That is the whole philosophy of how I practice, applied to a strap. "Ultimately, I want your body creating its own support." Over time, "strength, capacity, and tolerance should eventually do the job that the brace is doing externally."

## What actually corrects posture?

Teaching.

"True correction for posture requires neuromuscular education and teaching the muscles on the backside of the body to stay engaged, to allow the shoulders to be pulled back, to allow the head to sit over the spine, and to allow the pelvis to sit in a neutral position."

None of that comes from a product. "If we want to fix posture, we have to take an active approach to this and teach the muscles how to fire actively to maintain a correct posture." In practice that means getting up often, lengthening the front of your body, and strengthening the back of it, which I laid out in [the posture and pain article](/journal/can-bad-posture-cause-pain).

"So remember, posture cannot be fixed with a passive approach." It has to be built.

## One last thing

Not bad, misleading. They hold you in a position instead of teaching your body to hold itself, and you can become dependent on them.

A back brace after an injury can reduce symptoms and buy time to rebuild. The goal is still to come off it.

Neuromuscular education: teaching the muscles on the backside of the body to stay engaged, with strength doing the job a brace does externally.

### Do posture apps that buzz when you slouch help?

They are a reminder, not a correction. Posture is something your body has to maintain and create on its own.
